The site where Ri Ra now stands was a department store that lay vacant for a number of years. The current structure dates from about 1910. However, during construction, stable equipment and horseshoes were unearthed suggesting that at some point in history the site was used as a stable.

The Ri Ra Irish Pub in Charlotte opened on March 14 1997, coinciding with the birthday of Ciaran Sheehan, one of the pubs founding owners. Ciaran went to great lengths to meticulously source, transport and rebuild the pub from its original location in Ireland to its new home in Charlotte. Ri Ra celebrated its 10th anniversary in March 2007.

The pub is on two levels with an upper level terrace overlooking Hearst Plaza in the middle of downtown Charlotte. The venue can accommodate private parties of up to 200 people.
